Introduction to Dreamwalking

Hail to the collective consciousness!

Over the last few months, I have been teaching some introductory workshops on Shamanism, and they have been quite well received (which I am grateful for!). One of the topics that have come up in this workshop is lucid dreaming and coupling it with shamanic journeying. This is what I like to call “Dreamwalking”.

Now typically when people do journeying they are in a trance state but they are awake, riding between the cool brain waves between the Delta range and Theta state. These two brainwaves both have excellent uses by the way, so I highly recommend learning about them and using tools such as binaural beats and frequency generators to get yourself there much faster. Anyway, while doing journeying most people use a drum or binaural beats etc. to help focus their brain into these wave ranges in order to achieve a fairly vivid daydream-like state, where they are in control of most of the goings on.

Some people prefer to just let the beat of the drum take them wherever it is that they end up going, but the definition of journeying I am using in this article is essentially a controlled daydream that has a goal and a purpose. An example of this would be wanting to retrieve a broken soul shard, so you would journey to where the piece broke off, and you would go through the trials necessary to get it back and reintegrate it into yourself. (I will eventually do a post on soul parts and soul retrieval, in the meantime google is your friend.)

These journeys or daydreams with intent can be very vivid, very realistic, and feel extremely real to the practitioner once they have done the work to build the skill, and modern science now shows that the brain can’t decipher the difference between what we do in the real world, and the things we do in these journeys, so by creating changes in our minds in the journeys, we are effectively creating real changes in our brainwaves, and in the world we perceive! Super cool right?!

Lucid dreaming is a phenomenon that many people experience naturally at least once or twice in their lives, if you haven’t it usually goes something like this: You’re walking around your house and there are people there that you don’t really know, there’s some music playing, it seems like you’re having a party, but you don’t party do you? Now you’re feeling really weird because you don’t remember inviting people over, or how you got to where you are now, you turn around and one of the weird people is yelling at you and angry, and this is all so vivid you feel like you are in a psychosis, you get angry back at the guy, one thing leads to another and he kills you. boom you wake up in your bed sweating and freaking out and realize, all is safe and well and it was just a dream, but holy shit that was a really vivid dream, it was so REAL! Now that moment you came to consciousness in that dream and began to control it a bit is what many would consider lucid dreaming. A dream that is so real, it is as if you are going about your normal day.

Typically I would consider the above a vivid dream or a highly aware dream, not a lucid dream. To me lucid dreaming begins to happen when we learn to take control of the dream, for example, you find yourself in a nightmare so you change the channel to a happy dream, or perhaps you decide you want to fly and you do, or maybe you want to learn about magick so you materialize yourself a teacher or a book that you can learn from. Once you begin to become adept at inducing and controlling your lucid dreams in order to complete specific tasks or journeys, this is what I call Dreamwalking, and in my opinion, it is one of the strongest tools in a magickian or shamans toolbox.

Sounds like fun right? or Maybe it sounds like a lot of work, either way, you are right! So where do you begin? Below I will outline some methods I have used to develop my dreamwalking abilities personally, that I feel will be able to help most people. Please keep in mind if you take sleeping pills, antidepressants, antipsychotics, or you are intoxicated before bed, you may have a harder time with this, but with persistence, you can certainly still develop the skill.

  1. Step one is to start keeping a dream journal! This is extremely important, and a tool that many new psychonauts scoff at and don’t use. By journaling your dreams you are actually refiring the neurons in your brain that fired when you were in the dream, creating better pathways, thus making it easier to recall dreams and easier to become lucid over time. You might be saying “I never remember my dreams anyway.” that’s fine!

    Simply write down anything you remember, this can be how you feel such as happy, sad, scared, loved, content etc. Write down any colours you remember, any names you remember, anything and everything from your feelings to your memories. Neurons that fire together, wire together, and this is a very important step in training your brain to not only remember dreams, but become aware, and eventually lucid in your dreams.

    Some people recall things better if they stay still and don’t move when they wake up, some recall better in the position they were sleeping in such as on their back or side. Experiment and find out what works for you, but begin writing as soon as possible upon waking or you will find the details will begin to fade very rapidly on you. Date each dream entry, give it a title, and write down any keywords that have meaning to you, this will help you to build your own correspondences you can use at a later time to interpret your dreams.

  2. Step two is to target your two longest REM cycles, for the average person who sleeps 8 hours these are the last 2 hours of sleep. These last two hours are actually two separate sleep cycles, so starting out you can actually have two chances per night to get into a lucid dream. Now what you want to do to target these is set an alarm for 6 hours after you go to sleep, if you are someone who takes a while to go to sleep keep that in consideration and set it for the appropriate amount of time such as 6 hours and 20 minutes after you go to bed. Then go to sleep. Once awake you are going to get up, stretch a bit, maybe get a drink of water or go to the bathroom, spend at least 5 to 10 minutes being awake and out of bed, this gets your mind back into a semi-awake state. Then simply go back to bed with the intent to have a lucid dream, some people repeat over and over in their head something to the effect of “I am lucid dreaming” until they fall asleep, this isn’t entirely necessary but can be helpful. Go back to sleep and you may be shocked to find yourself awake in a completely different spot than your bedroom.

    If you get no results the first night, simply try again. If you find you aren’t getting good results in the 6 to 7-hour window, try setting your alarm for your last REM cycle, so this would be 7 hours after going to sleep in the 7-8 hour window. Do the same thing, wake up, walk around for a few minutes, and go back to sleep. If you are really a keener, you can set two alarms in one night, one at 6 hours and one at 7 hours to take advantage of both REM cycles. Keep doing this until you begin to find yourself having more and more aware dreams, and find that you are recalling more and more for your journals. Eventually, you will find yourself in a dream and you will be completely aware that you are dreaming!

  3. Step three is to create a set of reality checks you can perform to determine if you are in fact dreaming, or if you are awake. (Eventually, your lucid dreams will become so real and life like that you will have a hard time telling the difference between your dreams and reality, so this is an important thing to learn.) I will provide a few different methods here, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. My personal favourite that I use many times daily is to take the index and middle fingers of your dominant hand and try to push them through the palm of your other hand, in reality, they will stop and you will feel the pressure on your palm, in a dream, they will go right through. In a dream you can also pass through objects and walls, so pushing against a wall or counter is another useful reality check. You can fly in dreams, so try jumping and seeing if you can float. Often times in dreams checking the time is a great tool as well, usually, the 2nd time you check a clock the time will have changed. A mirror is also a useful reality check, look at your reflection and see how you look, often in dreams, we see ourselves very different than we see ourselves in reality.

    These are all great tools to use, and you can practice them almost anywhere, which makes them even more valuable. I recommend doing a reality check a minimum of 4 times a day when starting, I personally reality check at least once an hour, not only will this tell your brain you are looking for a dream state, it will help wire it to induce a lucid state, which is after all the goal of a dreamwalker.

  4. Step four happens only once you have begun to learn how to induce your lucid dreams and reality check to gain full awareness. Once you reality check and you realize you are dreaming you have a whole new universe to explore, so get exploring!
    Some fun things you can try in the beginning are:

    • Changing the channel: this is where you think of a different place or activity and the scenery changes.

    • learning to fly: to fly you simply need to raise your arms up above your head and will it or jump slightly (flying takes practice to get right, keep at it!)

    • working with spirits: you will find that there are a lot of NPC’s (non-player characters) in your dreams, these people are kind of just filling in the background but there are also many active “inhabitants” in your dream world that you can learn many magnificent things from.

    • travel to new places: travelling can be done by flying or changing the channel or even taking an elevator or airplane or whatever play with it and see what is right for you. 


The bottom line is that this is a universe you have been going to your entire life every night, once you master being lucid and controlling it you can do and learn anything in this place, so try whatever you want, the possibilities are truly endless! Just make sure you’re actually dreaming before you kiss that stranger, or before you dance naked under the moonlight drinking tequila at a music festival!

This is a very basic intro to dreamwalking but it is an excellent place to start, I wish you all great success in your endeavours!

Shamanic Dismemberment

What is shamanic dismemberment?

It is a process through which a shamans spirit animals, guides, teachers, and relations tear the shaman apart in a journey. This is often a fairly traumatic experience, it must be, after all, it is done by our guides of power to strip us of all that no longer serves us in our quest for spiritual enlightenment and development. Typically the first time this happens it is a very emotional, and frightening experience. This process involves your power animals and guides tearing you limb from limb, removing your flesh and gnawing, and ripping your body apart. You will be completely devoured and ripped to shreds until you are no more. Your guides will then rebuild you at the end of this process and put you back together a new person, rising from your ashes just like the mighty phoenix. The first time you do this, or experience this is usually once you have built a very strong bond with your power animals, guides, teachers, and relations, and can be considered an initiation of sorts into the life of a shaman.

This is typically not something that a person just beginning down the path of shamanism should do, however it is likely that this may happen on its own while you are practicing journeying, and as such I hope this article can help those who may have had it happen and were unprepared or those who have not yet experienced this. This is also a process that can be learned and can be repeated, many shamans go through a dismemberment annually in a ritual to rid themselves of all energies, thoughts, emotions, addictions, etc. that no longer serve them for their highest good on their spiritual path.

My first experience with shamanic dismemberment:

The first time I experienced a full dismemberment was after a period of fasting, and deep journeying with the aid of my drum. I had been working in my astral temple with my guides when they beckoned me into a bathhouse in my temple. (I will do a subsequent blog post on creating your own astral temple.) The bathhouse appeared to me as a great room made of stone, I entered through a stone pathway and there was a solid stone wall to my left, with two large pools to the right, and a solid wall ahead of me. Lit torches lined the walls casting a flickering light filled with shadows and a brilliant yellow glow. I turned to face the pools which seemed to be bottomless, the one on my left was filled with icy cold water and the one on my right was steaming hot. I felt a strong pull towards the hot pool, so I undressed and got in. As I lay in the pool floating on my back I was surprised to find there was no roof on the bathhouse and found myself staring up at the night sky, black with numerous shimmering stars poking holes in the curtain of night. As I gazed upon the beautiful scene of flickering lights I found my consciousness expand outward more and more until I felt I was a part of the universal consciousness, I felt one with everything in existence and a certain sense of peace and calming took me over….. quickly followed by an overwhelming sense of fear as Eagle spirit appeared and screamed as it chased me back down to my astral body in the bubbling hot pool below, I fell fast and hard and as soon as I hit the pool Eagle sunk his talons into me and began tearing my flesh from my body beginning with my face. Screaming in agony, I began to cry as emotions were being peeled from me like the sting of an onion on the eyes. More animals joined eagle in tearing me apart and feasting on my body, wolf ripped out my innards and began to feast on them, badger ripped my legs apart, and coyote and raven feasted on my bones and what was left of me when the others were done. This was the most terrifying and frightening experience I had ever had up until this point, the pain surged through my body for what seemed like hours and then, all at once, a calm, warm, pleasant, loving feeling swept over my being and my consciousness was pulled out of the bathhouse to a raging bonfire outside, and the sun began to rise into the sky. It was here that my power animals put me back together, piece by piece, each shredded piece of meat and flesh at a time, from the feet up to my head and down my arms, putting me back together like a bloody puzzle until I was whole again, and in place of all the pieces that they removed for good, they put new gifts of various brilliant gems and fire, and light. They then asked for an offering and I threw my old skin, which I found discarded beside me on the bright green grass covered in blood and black ooze, into the fire and burnt it in their honour. My body began to shine with a bright blinding glow of light, from my very core outward. This is when I was able to come back to consciousness into my waking body, where I found I was covered in sweat and shaking, the entire process had taken 2 hours, but it felt like an eternity. I walked out of that room a very different person than I was when I went in.

Helpful tips and reminders:

I hope that the details of my experience can help you to confront your dismemberment when it happens to you, whether you are thrown into it or if you take it on by choice. If you choose to follow the shamanic path, a dismemberment is likely to happen when your guides feel that you need it most. It will be a truly powerful and life changing experience. Once you have experienced it you may then begin practicing it as often as you feel guided to, it is a process that many shamans do numerous times in their lives. You may also create your own journey to do this if you feel you are ready, I highly recommend you become adept at journeying, meditation, and basic shamanic practices before attempting this so that you have as many tools at your disposal to help you out. Be sure to take care of your body physically if you choose to push yourself to this experience. Helpful tools are fasting, exhaustion, drumming, and a dark room where you have as much sensory deprivation as possible.

How to accept distance healing and attunements

I get asked this question quite often, “How do I accept your distance energy work or attunements?”, so I decided to make a blog post about it for easy reference. The process of accepting distance healing and attunements is actually rather simple. If you have experience with meditation, visualization, and energy work in general, then it will be a snap. Below are the steps I recommend to my clients to get the most out of a distance energy treatment or attunement.

1. Dedicate a minimum of 15 minutes to this experience, the more time the better, I typically try to aim for an hour when I receive them myself, as that is what I have become accustomed to. If you only need 15 minutes, cool, if you prefer 30 minutes, cool, if you need 52 minutes and 18 seconds exactly, also cool.

2. Make the set and setting your own, and make it comfortable! Create any amount of theatre you need to get yourself in THE ZONE. Whatever this may mean for you. I personally like a nice hot bath, with some salts, frankincense, and a solitary burning candle in the pitch black room. If your place is sitting on the bus on the way to work, or laying in your bed, or sitting in lotus position by a waterfall, then that’s awesome! Do whatever makes it feel great for you.

3. Get yourself into a nice relaxed position, close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing. Deep breathing is very helpful here, make sure you are breathing deep into your belly. You should feel your belly rise and fall with each deep inhale and exhale. If not, then your breathing too shallow. Focus on your deep breathing for a few minutes until you get nice and relaxed. Remember to keep breathing deeply in and out this whole time, and for the whole process to follow.

4. Put your focus on each body part, with the intention of allowing the feeling of relaxation to settle in. Beginning with your toes, feel each toe relax deeply, let the stress of each muscle dissipate. Then each foot, then your lower legs, calves and shins, then your upper legs, quads and hams, then your buttocks, then your abdomen and back, then your chest and shoulders, then your arms and hands, then your neck, face muscles, and head. Let the tension release from each muscle from the tips of your toes to the top of your head, and let each muscle in your body relax fully.

5. Now that your whole body is relaxed it is time to call in the energy. All my energy work will be sent to my clients via the Chi ball method. Which is a ball of energy that I have filled with a specific intention, attunement, or healing request. Begin by stating very loudly in your head something to the effect of “I call in the chi ball that Azariel has sent to me now, may it enter my body, mind, and spirit at full power, for my greatest good, and the greatest good of all.” Now visualize a brilliant ball of energy coming down from the sky. This ball may appear any colour, or be any shape that is relevant to you, it may not be a ball at all. This is perfectly okay and normal. If you end up getting a red rose, instead of a white ball, that is OKAY. Just trust it will appear to you however it needs to. Now visualize the ball of energy descending from the sky into your crown chakra, and working its way down to your heart chakra. Once it is at your heart chakra, visualize it exploding out to the top of your head, the tips of your fingers, and the tips of your toes, filling your entire body with brilliant energy. Continue to breathe in this energy and feel it fill your entire body, mind, spirit, and aura and continue to let it pulsate and do its work for as long as it takes. You will know when it is done because you will get a thought in your head of “it is done” or you will simply feel when it is time to be done. For some people they will feel the energy dwindle after a time. However the process ends, will be entirely unique to you.

6. Now take some time to ground yourself. You can do this by visualizing a cord of energy leaving your navel and going to the center of the earth and attaching itself to the earth, then visualize any excess energy going through this cord from your body to the earth as a gift to the earth, retract the cord from the earth back into your body when you feel you have sent all the excess energy away.
Another grounding method is to visualize your feet growing like the roots of a tree into the earth and all the excess energy draining from your body into the earth. When you feel all the excess energy has gone to the earth, visualize the roots retracting back into your body and your legs going back to normal.

7. Once the process is complete, take some time to write down any notes you may have about how it made you feel, any impressions it gave you, thoughts you may have had, or anything you feel is relevant and important.

Thats it! Easy peasy!
